One man’s passion: Baron Philippe de Rothschild.
In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, a representative of the English branch of the Rothschild family, acquired an estate in Pauillac called Château Brane-Mouton, which he renamed Château Mouton Rothschild. In 1922, Baron Philippe, aged only 20 at the time, took over the running of the estate. In 1924, Baron Philpeakippe pioneered “château bottling” of the entire crop, a practice hitherto unheard of and a sign of the owner’s heightened responsibility. In 1926, he had the famous “grand chai” built, stretching over 100 metres. Its striking design remains an iconic symbol of Château Mouton Rothschild.
Every year since 1945, the label of Château Mouton Rothschild has been illustrated by an original work from a major contemporary painter. Dali, César, Miró, Chagall, Warhol, Soulages, Bacon, Balthus, Tàpies, Koons, Doig… a stunning collection that grows larger each year with the addition of a new work and which forms the famous “Paintings for the Labels” exhibition. From the outset, his ambition was to make Château Mouton Rothschild a place of art and beauty.
When Baron Philippe died in 1988, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild took over from her father at the head of the estate. Through her energy, charisma, and radiant personality, she was able to keep the illustrious Château Mouton Rothschild at its peak.
Today, it is her three children, Camille and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, who preside over the destiny of Château Mouton Rothschild. Faithful to the work of their grandfather and mother, with the same enthusiasm and determination, all three are committed to putting Baron Philippe’s watchword into action: “Live the vine”, or in other words, share its good and bad times daily, serve it through technique and honour it through art.
A Premier Grand Cru Classé, Château Mouton Rothschild extends over 82 hectares of vineyard in Pauillac in the Médoc, planted with the region’s typical grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon (79%), Merlot (17%), Cabernet Franc (3%), Petit Verdot (1%). The average age of the vineyard is 50 years.
